Oaxaca - another colorful Mexican City

Oaxaca appears to be everything I was told it would be.  There is no question that it will easy to fill 6 days! The question is - how much energy is left to fill those days.


One of the first events we experienced was a calenda.  7:30 at night and the street exploded with music, dance, huge puppets and fireworks!  I have no idea what the celebration was but apparently these happen frequently for any occasion. The next day we witnessed another one which we believe was part of a wedding.  












This is a wedding destination and in Santa Domingo there can be up to 20 weddings in a weekend. Santa Domingo is not the main cathedral but is known for the gold inside.





The free walking tour was a great way see some of the area and learn more about the history and culture of this city and state.  Finally I started to understand the history which is indeed complicated.  We also learned about many places we should visit or eat at in the next few days.  David was knowledgeable, passionate about his city and spoke perfect English!  Add an hour bus tour and we managed to see a little of the city.

Delicious chocolate shop - most Mexicans use chocolate for mixing drinks rather than eating.  The wooden tool is used to mex the chocolate and liquid

We tried a couple of recommended food and drink stops.  The first was a corn drink called Tejate - not my favorite.  The empanada at Carmen’s food stand was delicious but very messy.  Carmen’s claim to fame - it was featured on a Netflix documentary called Street Food of Latin America.  In case you don’t want to watch it all, fast forward to 22 minutes, 30 seconds as stated on her menu.
