Breathe Taking Copper Canyon

Although the Copper Canyon is not as deep as Urique, it is larger than than the Grand Canyon.  It is 25 million years younger than the Grand  Canyon but 4 times the size and in some places more than a 1000 metres deeper. You are seeing just a small piece of the vast 60,000 sq km from the hotel which balances on the rim of the canyon. By this time we had climbed to 7500 feet and could certainly feel the temperature difference as the sun set.

The view from our room

The arch to the long steep climb to our room

My new partner at the hotel - one of the loudest meows I have ever heard.

Every time you turn a different direction you catch a different view and none of them get tiresome.  There really are few words to describe them beyond marvellous and incredible.  Even the Americans we met along the way said they surpassed the Grand Canyon!

Dotted throughout the Canyon are very simple homes - no running water and no electricity that belong to the indigenous people known as the Tarahumara.  They do not live in communities but are spread out.  The name comes from Raramuri and means foot runner.  They are very famous for their long distance running, often competing in Ultra Marathons, often choosing to use their simple sandals rather than runners.  In addition, the women are known for their weaving of baskets.  Of course these are available everywhere you look.

This is one of the ultra marathon runners - he has run races up to 400 km

To help you enjoy this special place is Adventure Park where you can see more with a cable car ride or do as the park suggest and be adventuresome.  Me, I rode the cable car but Irena - zip lining and Verra Ferrara which means repelling down the cliff, walking along the side of the cliff, jumping from one rock to another and let’s not forget walking a tightrope.  Thanks, I’ll stick with videoing the action.

Just a few more shots  - the pictures really don’t do it justice.
