So many places to see and so little time for all of it. About an hour out of Morelia is Lake Pátzcuaro. The sky was blue and the surroundings very pretty as we boarded our boat for the 30 minute ride over to the Isla de Janitzio. Birds in the water, mountains in the background and a demonstration by the local fishermen were the attractions over.

Loved the wood carved animals |
The island is a gigantic rock and the largest of the 5 islands. High atop is a massive statue honouring Moroles, another famous person in the revolution. Not feeling like a climb up many steps we observed it from below while Eduardo, our guide, went up for pictures.
Below, there were many windy streets, full of shops, restaurants and a couple of schools. Adventure here meant trying the very tiny fish, fried up in lots of oil. They weren’t bad.
A quiet boat ride back and we were on our way to the charming town of the same name. I thought this place was special two years ago and once again Pátzcuaro displayed its beauty. We visited a couple of churches that were in great contrast to each other. The first, a shrine was very nice inside. It wasn’t over the top like many appear to be. It is the shrine for cures in medicine. Outside were numerous vendors selling teas and other medicinal products.
The next church was very plain both inside and out No fancy finis, in fact it looked like it could handle a little love. Inside, simple was the word. In many ways it was refreshing. This church holds mass in indigenous languages. And right across the street - another church.
The house of 11 patios was once a convent. Today it holds workshops for artisans and sells beautiful products - weaving, copper, jewelry. Given more time I’m sure our bags would have been a lot fuller. The courtyards were pretty with their flowers especially the poinsettia with a very different flower.
A walk through the square and market and it was time to return to Morelia. Short trips always get longer when you get near the city - traffic everywhere is heavy.
