Colder than Vernon - Creel

Yes we knew it would be cold but we were a bit unprepared for just how cold it would be. Day time high of about 9 degrees with wind and the overnight low of -7 degrees!  Thanks to the gas fireplace in our room for keeping us warm overnight!  An interesting hotel - all wood inside and very rustic.  We had the best of intentions to walk to a local traditional restaurant for dinner but the cold encouraged us to eat pizza, taste the local beer and have a liquor by the fire.

Yes that is snow

The town of Creel is quaint but full of many souvenir shops, all with the same stuff only cheaper. Shops also carried lots of winter wear for those not well prepared like us!  It is also home to a fantastic little Tarahumara museum.  Check out the little you tube video on Lorene, the first Tarahumara woman to run an ultra marathon.

A highlight in Creel was lunch at a very traditional spot.  The pozole soup was delicious and the hospital for hang overs sign was a good chuckle.

Before arriving in Creel we made a few stops.  First was a visit to Lake Arareko - nice but certainly not the most impressive sight.

We also had a chance to visit a cave home that is still occupied. Some of the local indigenous people still live in these caves.

Even cave homes have a cat and he is using one of the 3 seats in the house

This area is famous for some mysterious rock formations.  The frogs and mushrooms were ok and then we drove and drove down a road to the valley of the monks.  I’m not saying anything else but will let my pictures tell you the story - sensational!!
