The little village of Cerocahui is located 25 minute from the train station. I think I finally learned to say it after I left. Our hotel was a small boutique hotel called Hotel Mission. Right beside the church, it was a peaceful place to visit. Our room was very cold so they lit the fire - yikes it was so hot!
The grounds were also quaint and would be lovely in the green season. Unfortunately the pool was not open.
A totally charming small village which we covered in a short walking tour. There is a girls boarding school - families are so remote that is necessary to have the students stay there during the week. The school is run by the nuns and has children from kindergarten up. The girls are dressed in their traditional dress which is very colourful pleated skirts, a colourful blouse and sometimes their heads covered. They are very shy! They do have their own Tarahumara language but most also understand Spanish. Very few understand English.
The hotel chain also started a vineyard and winery just below the town with a few grapes on the property. Of course not the season for vines to be growing we had to settle for wine tasting. They make 5 kinds and we tasted them all. They were n fact quite delicious but weren’t your sale bottles from Mega as they ranged from 700 to 1400 pesos per bottle. Once again we met two charming sisters from Tijuana and shared lots of laughs with them.
The church was another beautiful building that we had a chance to see in and out.
The streets of Cerocahui- more than just dogs following you.
An early morning trip to the Urique Canyon look out gave us the first hint of what was to come. Along the way there were beautiful stops to show us the canyon views and a unique waterfall. The canyon is also called Gallego Canyon. It is actually the deepest in the system with the floor at 1879 metres below. We only viewed it from the top but there is a village below. On the floor below it is much warmer and a variety of fruit trees are grown there. We were later told it can get to 50 degrees in the summer. The road down looked pretty windy and steep - a good hour plus drive down. I was definitely satisfied with the viewpoint and our first encounter with the local women selling their baskets and other crafts.

There is a small waterfall hidden in this hole in the rock. Not much water at this time of year. |
