East Bali

Following the coast we headed towards Eastern Bali.  Our 2 hour drive took us to a beautiful water temple called Tirta Gangga.  Bali was once a Kingdom and all areas had their king.  The King from this area was the last king in Bali and his descendants are still recognized.  The water temple was built for his many wives and even greater number of concubines!  It has beautiful gardens and pools (with some very fat fish in them)!  There are swimming pools but in the end we decided against them and took cover before the skies opened up telling us it was time to go to the hotel.

Nothing like a tropical rain!

Another fabulous room and beautiful grounds awaited us in Candidasa.  The pool was beckoning but the weather was less than cooperative.

Our highlight for this area would be visiting Wayan otherwise known as Sandi.  Under Sandi’s guidance we did a meditative yoga and also learned a bit more about the Hindu religion.  His message was SMILE and it will go a long way.  You really do see that principle in practice in Bali.  Sandi also explained that while they are Hindu, it is considered more of a way of life rather than a religion.

Our walk through the rice fields took us by various stages of rice fields from ploughing to close to harvest - all work is done by hand. We walked through dense jungle right next to the rice fields.  Lots of plants to learn about and to learn how they are used for medicine.

Planting baby rice one at a time

We were then served a traditional lunch on wicker plates and wrapped in banana leaf.

Our final stop was the King’s palace.  The descents live in the buildings behind while the front is open to tourists.  More beautiful gardens and water features.

Temples, Temples, Temples

It is easy to get templed out in Bali.  Hopefully we have put in the right amount of temples in for this trip.  We visited Tirta Empul which...
