And then should you desire you can get up early and head to the reflecting pool shortly after 5 and enjoy sunrise over Angkor Wat! Unfortunately I got more bites than the iconic sunrise shot but I tried and so did several hundred other people.
There are thousands of temples in the area but there are a few that are stand outs. Ta Prohm was built in the late 12th century. The beauty of this temple is the way nature has interacted with the temples the roots and trunks of banyans and strangler figs make fascinating views. Fans of The Tomb Raider will recognize the one tree now known as the Laura Croft tree.
Banteay Srei is considered the gem of the Angkor area. Also known as “ Citadel of the women”, it has detailed base reliefs and is the only temple made from pink sandstone.

There were several more smaller temples visited, each with its on distinctive characteristics.
Preach Khan - late 12th century. A large linear complex in the jungle that covers 138 acres.
Neak Prean - or “entwined snakes” is a small temple on an island in the middle of a reservoir. This temple is frequently flooded in rainy season. A wooden walkway takes you to the temple and over the lotus filled waters.
Roulous Group - these are the early temples of the site and date back to the 8th and 9th centuries.
