The Zocalo is the heart of the city. It is a gigantic square in front of the national palace and cathedral. In the centre is a gigantic flag which is lowered each day. This month it is full of marigold and amazing structures celebrating the Day of the Dead. The crowds were huge at 10 in the morning so we can only imagine what it was like at night!
The big day arrived and it is time for the Day of the Dead parade. This is about the 4th big parade during this time - despite it being called the Day of the Dead, activities have been happening since early Oct.
We were concerned how we were going to watch it but not to worry- parade morning the chairs came out for sale! Ours were put in the front row and we were ready. Only problem was- it was still about 4 hours away. Amazingly we passed the time and soon we saw our first evidence of the over 1 1/2 hour parade. A couple of interesting observations - no real high tech and the most commercial float was the Unicef float. I’ll let the pictures and videos tell you the rest of the story as best as they can.
In an effort to get into the spirit 3 of us had our faces painted.
From the parade we managed to secure a reservation in a bar steps away that would play the baseball game. Yep there we were seated next to an entire Dodgers table. The day would have been perfect with a win but it was an exciting game and even the fans were complimentary to the team. Famous Canadian saying - “Next Year”
