El Chepe

The moment arrived and we left our hotel for the El Chepe station.  It was so interesting to see the excitement grow as everyone awaited the train and when it arrived you could feel the excitement.

After settling in our first class seats and listening to the instructions, it was time to hit the terrace car or as some might say the party car.  It was crowded and lo and behold the Mexican group from the hotel the night before were already there - the party had begun.  They do like to dance and have a good time and were quite ready to include us.

Ok the trip is not about the party, it is about the fantastic scenery, the tunnels and the marvel of train travel.  It was all going well when suddenly we stopped - would you believe it - the train hit a cow on the track.  I asked our guide if this had ever happened and he hadn’t experienced it before.  A stop of about 1/2 hour to fix the brake lines and we were on our way to our stop, Bahuichivo.

A short ride and we were in Cerocahui.  This small little town has a lovely church, a winery, and a boarding school for 77 girls - aged 6 to 16.  The boarding school was a highlight as we had arranged to take school supplies and candies to the school.  I think everyone had a little tear when they gave out the candies to the girls who were all dressed in traditional dresses. Definitely a feel good moment!

The hotel was so quaint but the rooms were so cold - fortunately some of us had the fireplaces going to take off the chill.
