Beyond the beaches of Mexico

My new adventure has begun.  I left Puerto Vallarta yesterday with a friend to explore parts of Mexico.  It was a long day of travel as we had one flight from PVR to Mexico City, a long lay over and a delay and a second flight back to the coast to Los Mochis.  It was then another 90 min drive to get to our accommodation in El Fuerte, a magical town of 20,000 and our starting point for our Copper Canyon adventure.  A late dinner and then off to bed.

We are staying at a lovely colonial hotel.  It is made up of 3 mansions, the oldest dating back to the late 1800’s.  Its claim to fame - Zorro was born here.  The rooms, the courtyards are all very colonial.  Beautiful sitting areas, dining rooms and courtyards.  We have El Zorro in our courtyard.

Then it was time for a short historical walk through Centro.  Our guide gave us lots of history as we went along.  Like most Mexican towns, it has a beautiful main square and of course many colourful buildings. No square would be complete without the local church.  No pics today of the church as there was work being done inside and the scaffold was not that impressive!

No this is not the train we are riding!

Off to visit a village of the local indigenous people, known as the mayos - not to be confused with the mayans.  These people originally came from Asia, through Mongolia, Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and US to finally land here by the river.  They have their own dialect which we learned from one lady is dying off as the young people are not learning it.  Two stops for us.  The first was to see some local dancing and then we stopped to see tortillas being made, no press here.  Tasted the coffee and the tortillas, all very simple before watching one of the sisters make a pottery bowl.  Again, no fancy equipment - all bu hand, dried in the sun and then put under burning logs to fire it.  The sisters are 70 and 75.

The evening was finished with a delicious meal with flan as the dessert, a fun waiter and of course Zorro !
