Beyond Mexico City

It’s time to leave Mexico City and the first destination will be Queretaro.  Our rout first took us to the charming Pueblo Mágico city of Amealco.  A Magical City has meant it has a special quality and has been declared magical by the government which also provides funding for tourism.  In this case it is all about the LeLe doll which has become quite famous.

The town is charming and we had a chance to visit 2 special places - the doll museum and the saddle shop. As in all Mexican towns the heart of Amealco is the main square with its sign and of course cathedral.  My score for the day - new socks for 5 pesos a pair!

The people in this area are the Otomi.  Lunch was enjoyed in a very traditional family restaurant with local people - it was a real treat.

From there it was time to visit a candy factory and see them being made with wood fire ovens.

And then finally was the time when everyone was able to make their own LeLe Dolls.  There are a lot of grandchildren back home receiving LeLe dolls from this trip.  The women helping were dressed in traditional customs and preformed a traditional ceremony.  As we left they were on the road waving flags to say good bye.  It was totally enjoyable experience for everyone.
